Got an ocular prosthetic? Here's a quick care guide.

We have a few patients in our practice with a prosthetic eye. The eye was unfortunately lost due to a birth defect, ocular trauma or an ocular disease process. Most of our patients don't really know what to do in terms of prosthesis care. Here is an easy to read guide:

EVERYDAY

1. All cleaning is done with the prosthesis inside the eye socket.

2. Place a tissue under the lower lid & rinse the prosthesis and eyelids with sterile saline.

3. Wipe away any mucus on the prosthesis and eyelids.

4. Place 1 drop of Enuclene on the front surface of the prosthesis.

EVERY 6 MONTHS

1. Schedule an appointment every 6 months with your ocularist.

2. Your ocularist will clean, reglaze & check the fit of your prosthesis.

3. Schedule an appointment with your optometrist who may diagnose and treat the eye socket & eyelids for allergy, dryness, inflammation or infection.

EVERY 5 YEARS
1. Your prosthesis should be replaced.

2. Replacement is primarily due to wear & tear.

3. The good eye may also change in pupil size and color and the prosthesis should be upgraded to match.
